TO DISCIPLINE IS TO TRAIN
Restorative Solution is a philosophy and system wide intervention that places relationships at the heart of the educational experience. It is a prevention-oriented approach that fosters consensus-based decisions to resolve school conflict, such as disrespect, disruptive behavior, bullying (teasing, put downs, gossiping).
Rather than focusing on punishment for breaking rules Restorative Solutions focuses on the harms, needs and causes of student behavior. It changes behaviors in a more humanistic approach to dealing with student conduct. It also enhances the learning environment while reducing problem behaviors.
We want the students to learn something about their behavior and they don’t learn that through punishment. The goal of using restorative solutions for discipline is to change the school climate rather than merely respond to student behavior. It is not about dispensing punishment for breaking rules. It is about building relationships.
